The Ironworks has triumphantly reopened this month, bringing new life to Southend’s arts community just months after its heartbreaking closure.
Once a thriving cultural hub on Southend High Street, the Ironworks was forced to close last year following the loss of crucial government grant funding secured through Southend City Council.
Despite donations from Unity group member – Atlantic Pacific – and the wider community, the venue was unable to survive its battle to stay open.
But the story has taken a brighter turn. Thanks to a new partnership with Leigh-on-Sea Town Council, the Ironworks has relaunched in its brand-new home inside Leigh Community Centre.
The reopening marks not only a revival of the venue but also a transformation of its café and bar space, complete with a fully licensed bar, antique chandeliers, and the return of its iconic red Chesterfield sofa.
The community spirit that first tried to save the Ironworks continues to shine through. Atlantic Pacific was delighted to help fund a newly refurbished outdoor space.
To honour the contribution, Unity’s Executive Chairwoman Chrissy Nichols and Atlantic Pacific Group Chairman Ashley Nichols were presented with a commemorative plaque that is now displayed in the building along with those of other generous donors.
The Ironworks’ co-founders, sisters Ami and Natalie Solomons, have worked tirelessly to ensure the venue’s future, cementing its place once again as a much-loved centre for creativity, collaboration, and community spirit.
With its doors open once more, the Ironworks is now welcoming visitors and is reigniting the cultural heartbeat of the local community.
