Christine Nichols Attends Opening of ‘Poppies on the Pier’ Installation

November 05, 2025

Christine Nichols, a Board Member of the Southend Tourism Partnership, attended the official opening of Poppies on the Pier this week at the invitation of Southend City Council.

The installation, which features more than 110,000 handmade poppies, has transformed Southend Pier into a breathtaking sea of red in honour of those who served and sacrificed in times of war. The poppies – knitted and crocheted by contributors from across the UK and around the world – adorn the full 1.33-mile length of the iconic pier, creating the UK’s largest Remembrance art installation.

Contributors from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA, have joined together in this remarkable collective effort. The display culminates in a stunning visual tribute at the pier head, symbolising unity, remembrance, and gratitude for the fallen.

Christine Nichols expressed her delight at being part of such a moving event, saying she was honoured to witness this creativity and compassion come together in such a powerful way.

Poppies on the Pier will be on display from 5th to 16th November 2025, offering visitors a unique and emotional opportunity to reflect on the meaning of remembrance amidst one of Southend’s most striking landmarks.
